Hearing is not listening
Keep in mind that listening and hearing are two different things. While the ability to hear is a physical process that happens automatically as long as someone does not have any hearing problems, listening requires effort. When someone is speaking to you, you must pay attention and put forth a concentrated effort to understand what the person is saying to you.
