Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
On the far left of the spectrum is Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), in which you rent the hardware that you need. You are not responsible for maintaining the hardware that you use as it is taken care of for you by the provider. Things such as the storage drives, network components, and cooling systems are maintained for you.
However, you are responsible for just about everything else. In addition to your own application, you have to purchase, install, configure, and maintain things such as the operating system (OS), patches and security updates, anti-virus software, and middleware.
