It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Using a service registry
A service registry plays a key role in service discovery. It is a database containing service instances and their locations. The service registry must be highly available and kept up to date. In order to be accurate, service instances must be registered and deregistered with the service registry. This can be accomplished through either self-registration or third-party registration.
