It can sometimes be more difficult for a software architect to incorporate a new team member when the person is remote. You have to transfer technical (and business) knowledge to a new team member as well as any other relevant information. This can certainly be accomplished with only online meetings but you have to make sure the new employee has all of the information they need to succeed.
