Footstep Key Parts

Keys in 3ds Max are usually set on a specific frame. Footstep keys, on the other hand, can last several frames. There are four parts to every footstep key, one for each part of the foot’s motion. These are called leg states.

  • Touch: When the foot touches down. This key is one frame long, just before a Plant.

  • Plant: Between Touch and Lift, when the foot is flat. This key is usually several frames long.

  • Lift: Then the foot lifts off. This key is one frame long, just after a Plant.

  • Move: When the foot is in the air and not in a footstep at all. This key is usually several frames long.
