Converting Freeform to Footsteps

Generally, once you’ve created a purely freeform animation, you can no longer place footsteps in the scene. However, if your freeform animation meets certain rules, you can convert it to footstep animation and then edit the footstep sequence as usual.

Only freeform areas that resemble footsteps can be converted to footsteps. Your freeform animation must have places where a foot has IK Blend set to 1 and Object selected—which, as you saw with the walking dog, simulates the action of a footstep icon.
