You may have noticed that when you click Set Planted Key, this also checks the Join to Prev IK Key checkbox in the IK section of the Key Info rollout. When Join to Prev IK Key is checked and the previous key’s IK Blend value is set to 1 (as with a planted key), the foot or hand is forced to the same position it was in on the last key.

This feature is handy when you want a foot or hand to stay still at a frame where that foot or hand is already animated. When you click Set Planted Key and the previous key is a planted key, the foot or hand will snap to the same position as on the previous key.
