It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Data flow diagrams are used to show the flow of data. They show the transformation of data between processes and the external entities an organization, system, or function work with. There are a few key concepts to understand.
A context diagram is a data flow diagram that shows an entire system and how it exchanges information with external entities. It is like the big-picture view and is often used to describe the high-level context of net input flow and output flows of a system.
