Purpose

According to the BABOK® v3 guide, the purpose of Analyze Current State is as follows:

"to understand the reasons why an enterprise needs to change some aspect of how it operates and what would be directly or indirectly affected by the change."

The first step when assessing the current state is to gain a good understanding of why the change is needed. Most often, a potential change is needed when business problems or opportunities cannot be addressed without changing the current state.
