Square（図6-6）は、プロダクトデザイナーがいかに携帯電話を拡張できるかを
示した、もう一つの素晴らしい事例です。常時起動しているスマートデバイスとし
ての強みに基づき、新たな機能を加えることに成功しています。この製品のエコシ
ステムは、小さなプラスチックの正方形のデバイス（クレジットカードリーダー）
から構成されています。それをつなげることで、スマートフォンやタブレットをそ
の場でレジに変えることができるのです。これによって、小規模の事業者はすでに
持っているデバイスをクレジットカードの支払いのために使えます（しかも、それ
がクレジットカード会社に比べてはるかに低い取引手数料でできるのです）。
このエコシステム構成におけるモジュール性によって、個別のインフラや業務
プロセスを持つ専用デバイスを使った独自のシステムの構築・維持に費やされる
手間や複雑性、そして、電子廃棄物を大幅に節約することができるのです。
