Sing along with music videos!
YouTube hosts a lot of music videos, as a search for your favorite singer or band will probably reveal.
Some of them include subtitles within the video, but what if you want to sing along a video that
doesn’t include lyrics? A Greasemonkey script for Firefox comes to the rescue (with a tip of the hat
to the Google Operating System blog at http://googlesystem.blogspot.com).
First, install Greasemonkey from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/refox/addon/748
. Make sure that the monkey in the bottom right of Firefox is smiling, which means that
Greasemonkey is activated (click the icon if that’s not the case). Now jump to http://userscripts.
org/scripts/show/22569, click the “Install this script” button, and follow the installation process;
note that because user scripts can execute their own commands, you should install only scripts
you trust.
Next, locate a video clip at YouTube.com. There won’t be lyrics available for all videos, but
for some; to get this to work, it seems to be crucial that the artist’s name as well as the song
name are included in the title of the video. For instance, the URL http://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=tAtcJ954TjQ—titled “Badly drawn boy – Once around the block”—will do.
Now check the righthand sidebar on the video page. If all went well, an arrow and the word Lyrics ...
