In Gmail mobile, as shown in Figure 5-18, you see only the sender names and titles of emails, as well
as a few navigation links and a search box below them. By default, Gmail mobile won’t show your
labels, but you can click the “more” link at the bottom to activate some of them.
But Gmail mobile doesn’t just mobile-optimize your messages. When you click on an outgoing
link someone sent you within an email, Google will also display that web site in a version adapted
for your phone. Figure 5-19 displays how Google displays the popular blog Boing Boing (http://
boingboing.net) by ltering its text and images through a proxy (an extra server placed between
your browser and Boing Boing’s server) which cuts & chops everything into smaller, more edible
pieces.
Yet another option for email reading is to download a mobile Gmail program. If your phone supports
the Java framework, you can point your phone browser to http://gmail.com/app to get started with
this. (Although the downloadable program looks nicer on some phones, on other phones, it may
also cause problems—like too-small font sizes.)
