You can also link to searches. A search for “horses,” for instance, generates the following address:
http://mail.google.com/mail/#search/horses
This, too, can be useful—like when you want to point a friend to a specic conversation that the
two of you had. You can now pick some rather distinct words or a phrase from the message (such
as “John, attached nd the meeting details”), search for it, and copy the generated URL to send it
to your friend or colleague. They will now be able to easily retrieve the thread you are referring to,
assuming that they are also using Gmail, and that they haven’t deleted the message.

You can also link to specic labels that you’ve set up. Let’s say one of your labels is called “job,” for all
job-related mails. Clicking on the label link will take you to a page with the following URL, which you
can bookmark for later reference:
http://mail.google.com/mail/#label/job

Another way to use Gmail’s permalink-style URLs is to add a shortcut for composing a new mail to
the browser toolbar (the term “permalink” comes from the world of blogs, though note that not all
Gmail URLs are necessarily quite as permanent). For instance, in Internet Explorer, it’s the Links bar;
in Firefox, it’s called the Bookmarks Toolbar. In Safari, the name is Bookmarks ...
