Adjust the signal-to-noise ratio in your favor.
Spam—unwanted and noisy bulk messages to promote a product, site, or idea—is crawling around
every corner of the Web. And it’s not just in email, but also in blog comments, blog postings, search
results, tag-based photo sites, wikis, and basically everywhere that people (or bots) can write
something somehow. And if you run a blog, then identifying and suppressing comment spam may
become one of your daily challenges. Just clicking the Trash icon next to spam messages—you need
to be logged in to see the icon—is not always enough, so here are a few tips on how to cope.
First of all, you don’t necessarily need to enable comments for your blog. However, this should be a
last resort only; a comment-free blog is only half a blog. To disable commenting for visitors, log in to
http://blogger.com and switch to the Settings tab of your blog, and then the Comments subtab. In
the Who Can Comment eld, select “Only members of this blog” from the menu. This can prevent
commenting, as long as you don’t allow anyone to become a member. (You can also select the
“Registered Users” option; this won’t disable comments, but it will stop anonymous commenting.)
