“Chatback” is Google’s name for a live help feature for your
site. More than idle chatter, it can be an additional form of
communication on your site (complementing things like comment
forms, or your About page with contact info like an email address).
Other than measuring your visitors in mere numbers, or conducting a survey , you can
also directly chat with visitors to get feedback! Google offers a chat badge that you can post onto
your blog or any other web page, making this a simple undertaking, at least technically (taking the
time to speak with your visitors, and handling multiple conversations at once, is a different matter).
To get the chat widget, visit http://google.com/talk/service/badge/New and customize the badge
by adjusting the title and other options. Your title of choice may be “Talk to me,” “Have feedback? I’m
listening,” “Ask me a question,” or anything else. If you edit the conguration, click the “Update badge”
button to refresh the snippet. Copy the snippet (see Figure 12-17) and paste it into your blog software’s
