Google Maps had quite an effect on the Internet—not just on
users, but also on competing mapping products, which after
a while tried to improve their service in the direction of the
explorative, fast-paced interface Google built.
Google Maps isn’t the only good web mapping application, by far. There’s also Yahoo! Local Maps at
http://maps.yahoo.com, among others. Except for the lefthand side advertisement, the interface is
rather similar to Google Maps. A search box can take you straight to a location—you can enter “Rome,
Italy” for instance—and you can drag or zoom the map view. A click on the Hybrid button on top
displays a mix of street/city labels and satellite imagery, as in Figure 11-45.
Developers may be interested in dabbling around with the Yahoo! Maps web service. It can be found
at http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/ and offers not a single API but many APIs under one hood.
You need to sign up for an application ID as part of the Yahoo! Developer Network to get started.
