Expand the functionality of Google Maps through mapplets.
A “mapplet” is what Google calls a gadget that can be added to Google Maps. Mapplets take the opposite
approach from embedding the Google Maps API on your site ; instead of putting a small
Google Maps map on your site, you put a small part of your site or service onto Google Maps. Users can
then subscribe to your mapplet using Google Maps’ My Maps tab.
To get a taste of mapplets, you can subscribe to one yourself. Point your browser to Google Maps
(http://maps.google.com) and switch to the My Maps tab on top. Under the headline “Featured
content,” check the box titled Distance Measurement Tool. This tool will now be activated and you
can click any two points on the main map to calculate the distance using kilometers or miles, among
other units, including such exotic ones as “Babylonian trade cubit” or “American football eld.” As
pictured in Figure 11-9, I can see that I’m roughly 3,992 miles away from my editor Brian Jepson,
who works with me on this book using Google Docs.
Because these programmable widgets can interact with your own site’s data in new ways, they
are also called “maps mashups.” One such mashup lets you track the location of a package you
are waiting for . Other mashups allow you to create a jogging/hike route,
nd ski resorts, ...
