Greasemonkey is a Firefox browser extension that allows anyone to provide code that adds some
bells and whistles to web applications—including Gmail. If you’ve ever felt like you hit the limits of
Gmail’s native functionality, you might want to give Greasemonkey a try. To install this add-on, point
your Firefox browser to http://greasespot.net and click the “Download Greasemonkey” link. Select
the Install Now button to be guided through the installation process.
After restarting your browser, Greasemonkey is now active for you, indicated by a smiling monkey
icon in the bottom right of your browser (click the monkey head at any time to make it frown—this
deactivates Greasemonkey until you click the monkey again).
Greasemonkey on its own will not do anything in particular; you still need to add some custom
scripts. This is where http://userscripts.org comes in. It’s a giant directory of user-submitted
Greasemonkey scripts. A query for “gmail” using the site’s search engine returns dozens of results,
some of which are described in detail here.
To install any of the user scripts, just click the “Install this script” button on the script detail page
and close and reopen any browser windows that you expect to be affected by the script. ...
