is especially critical for the fi rst-time franchisee. Joining a restaurant franchise
system that is well established and has a proven record of success involves less
risk but usually is expensive with respect to initial fees and royalties; in addi-
tion, such a system usually imposes strict selection criteria. Newer franchises
may be less expensive but have greater associated risks. A careful assessment is
therefore necessary before a prospective franchisee selects a franchise.
Franchisor Qualifications
