INTERVAL datatypes

Oracle9i introduces two new interval datatypes:

INTERVAL YEAR TO MONTH

Stores a period of time using the year and month datetime fields with the following syntax:

INTERVAL YEAR (year_precision) TO MONTH

where year_precision is the number of digits used to specify the number of years, with a default value of 2.

INTERVAL DAY TO SECOND

Stores a period of time using the day, hour, minute, and seconds datetime fields. Defined with the following syntax:

INTERVAL DAY (day_precision) TO SECOND (fractional_second_precision)

where day_precision is the number of digits used to specify the number of days, from 0 to 9, with a default value of 2. fractional_second_precision specifies the number of digits in the fractional portion of the seconds, from 0 to 9, with a default of 6.

For more information on assigning values to INTERVAL datatypes, see the descriptions of the INTERVAL functions in Chapter 8.
