Syntax

The basic syntax for the file is:

                     service_name =
        (description_information
                                      (connect_information)
        )

where service_name is the name of the net service, description_information is the clause that provides the characteristics of the service, and connect_information is the clause that provides the connection details for that service.

Specify service_name by providing the name you want Oracle Net Services to use for the connection, followed by a period (.) and the name of the Oracle Net Services domain for the service name.

The TNSNAMES.ORA file can have multiple entries, each taking this form. Note that the parentheses are required for this file. The formatting shown is optional, but most Oracle users find it the most readable format, because there can be many sets of parentheses in any one entry.
