Understanding how Solaris and illumos differ

I've sort of been dreading this section, because it's very hard to talk about companies like Oracle without getting at least a little annoyed.

We're going to look briefly at the history of Oracle and their Sun acquisition, as well as looking at the OpenSolaris movement and the systems that spawned out of it.

Before we start, I should point out that illumos and Solaris have a very Unix background, and they're arguably the "purest" Unix derivatives available today. You might have never used either of them, but there's a good chance you've used a website or an online portal that's back-ended by either of these two OSes.
