SELinux isn't really as bad as everyone thinks, and it's come a long way since the days when things used to silently fail for no obvious reason. Generally, there's a plethora of tools and debugging programs available to you these days when it comes to finding the correct configuration for your system and programs, though they can (and do) fill books by themselves.
If you take anything away from this section, understand that disabling SELinux isn't the answer (that is, setting it to permissive mode), and that outside of a development environment, all you're doing is making life less secure for yourself in the future.
semanage also isn't the only way to manage SELinux policies, but it's very easy to use and quite a neat way ...
