As with most of what we look at, there are classic examples of software that has been kicking around in one form or another since roughly the 1970s, back when most programs had names of two or three characters (ls, cp, mv). One of these is top and another is free, both of which still have their place.

Then there are the more modern, slick, and beautiful programs. Gone are the monochrome CRT-designed applications, and, in their place, are Terminal applications that even support 256 colours!

Finally, there's NetData, which I touch on here because it's making quite the storm in the world of local administration.
