There's a notable omission in the preceding section, and that's how you work out if you're on a Windows system or not.

The easiest way I've found to check that I'm at a Windows prompt is to measure how quickly my soul is ebbing away from my body. Failing that, I look for a Music folder somewhere on the filesystem, which seems to be inexplicably on desktop and server installs alike.

Obviously, if the preceding two methods fail you, then consider that Windows usually has a GUI (unless it's a modern Server OS with a trendy systems administrator, in which case it might just be a blue PowerShell prompt instead. Either way, I suspect you'll know).
