Several options are available to the writer of a unit file and more are being added with every systemd release. There's a good chance that the operation you want to accomplish can be achieved with a unit file entry.

Despite the overwhelming array of options available to unit file authors, you still get people who insist on writing a bash script to do everything, and simply referring to this in a four-line unit file. It's possible, but it's not neat.
