How it works...

We started Redis as a service, using /etc/redis.conf as the configuration file (the default).

The default settings shipped with the EPEL version, at the time of writing, mean that when it starts, it's on the localhost address (127.0.0.1) and port 6379:

$ sudo cat /etc/redis.conf | grep "port 6379\|^bind 127.0.0.1"bind 127.0.0.1port 6379~

The settings in here also set the mode (protected by default) that dictates how Redis can start when listening on other ports:

# By default protected mode is enabled. You should disable it only if# you are sure you want clients from other hosts to connect to Redis# even if no authentication is configured, nor a specific set of interfaces# are explicitly listed using the "bind" directive. ...
