How it works...

This manual page is important, and there's no guarantee that it'll be consistent across the systems that you manage (that is, Debian and CentOS might look distinctly unfamiliar).

What it should be is the distribution maintainer's understanding of where specific files go on this distribution. So, according to this manual page, that is the following:

"/bin  This directory contains executable programs which are needed in single user mode and to bring the system up or repair it."

That one is fairly obvious, but what if we want a directory for add-on packages? hier for CentOS has you covered:
