If you don't want to use your own CA, you might consider using Let's Encrypt, a certificate authority that provides free certificates.
Usually, certificates cost money—a lot of money in some cases (such as Extended Validation certificates)—so it's nice to be able to secure your sites using a free offering.
The certificates are only valid for 90 days, which is something of a drawback, but it's perfectly possible to implement auto-renewal to combat this perceived problem.
Deployment and renewal can be accomplished by various tools that are available in a lot of distributions. On Debian boxes, you might consider installing the certbot package and having a go at configuring a web server of your own.
