How it works...

Pip and RubyGems try to be relatively self-contained, but they're still package managers, meaning that all they're effectively doing is querying an upstream repository for a package, and then downloading it onto your system.

When you update your PATH to update whichever binary location the new executables live in, you're able to run the packages that you've just installed.
