Temporary solutions and when to invoke them

Temporary solutions can be great, and necessary, depending on the situation you've found yourself in.

For example, if you've found yourself being awoken by an alarm at 5:00, informing you that a disk only has about 10% of disk space left available, you might decide to invoke a temporary fix:

  1. You've troubleshooted and determined that the disk is filling up at a rate of a gigabyte an hour, meaning it'll be full in an hour and a half
  2. You've also determined that the LVM setup on the box has 10 GB of free space available to you, to grow your logical volume
  3. You check to make sure the problem isn't caused by a more significant issue (the site being down) and realize it's just a noisy log because of Christmas ...
