It prides itself on having a vast array of software available, both in the form of pre-built packages (built quarterly at the time of writing) and "ports" that are built locally and are usually the most recent version of that piece of software. 

A lot of open source software is heavily Linux focused. This isn't the fault of the BSDs—it simply comes down to market share.
