These projects are public, and those involved are well aware of the stakes when there's a problem. One only has to take a look at the panic caused when big vulnerabilities are revealed to appreciate why notification avenues are so widely used and appreciated.
If a project had no means of communicating critical problems with its users, it would very quickly find itself inundated with concerned individuals, just wanting to know that the software they're using is being kept up to date.
All that we can do in this fight against security issues and breaking changes is keep informed, and act swiftly when we need to.
