Some popular and tricky software exists outside the realm of sense (as far as this opinionated author is concerned).

Of particular note are the Hashicorp suite of tools, which check to see if there's a new version of themselves available when invoked. This means that when you run Terraform, there is a chance that it will inform you that it is out of date, and you should download a newer version:

$ terraform --versionTerraform v0.11.7Your version of Terraform is out of date! The latest versionis 0.11.8. You can update by downloading from www.terraform.io/downloads.html

The package maintainers for distributions usually do not keep on top of this, through no fault of their own, and quite a few won't even bother to package software ...
