chown

First, we changed the ownership of our file:

$ sudo chown vagrant:root permissionfile

Here, we're using chown in its most basic way, dictating which user and group the file should belong to. The values are colon-separated, though if you're backward like me, you occasionally use the deprecated and incorrect full stop (.)instead.

You can just specify a user if you want to leave the group alone:

$ sudo chown vagrant permissionfile
