Take a quick look in /var/log/ at the messages file:
$ ls -lh /var/log/messages-rw-------. 1 root root 179K Dec 11 16:18 /var/log/messages
It's not huge, but if you've got an incredibly small disk, this could be a massive problem.
Say you've completely run out of space on the /var/log partition—what happens?
Let's remind ourselves of an example VM's partition layout, noting the lack of a dedicated '/var' partition:
