illumos

The spiritual continuation of the OpenSolaris project, illumos forms the base of a few different distributions that sought to keep the legacy of CDDL-based Solaris alive.

OpenIndiana is perhaps the most user-friendly of these distributions, and still features ongoing enhancements. It can be downloaded and tried out in a VM (which I would encourage, just for a poke around).

When you run it, though, don't be surprised to find references to Solaris and SunOS:

$ uname -aSunOS openindiana 5.11 illumos-42a3762d01 i86pc i386 i86pc

Featuring a small package pool, you're also unlikely to find the trendier software of the day, but it will have the programming languages you're familiar with, and it's undeniably solid.
