Git is extremely powerful, but it also has some functionality that is just plain nice.

log, for example, can be useful for reading commit messages:

$ git log --pretty=short

The output should look like the following screenshot:

tag can be useful for listing the tags people have added to different points-in-time of the code:

$ git tag | head -n50.0.10.0.20.010.30.3.1

branch can be used to see all the different branches that Git is aware of:

$ git branch -a* devel  remotes/origin/HEAD -> origin/devel  remotes/origin/acozine-patch-1  remotes/origin/devel  remotes/origin/mazer_role_loader  remotes/origin/release1.5.0 remotes/origin/release1.5.1 ...
