fstab has been around in one form or another since 4.0 BSD, released in 1980. Obviously, back then, it didn't use systemd, but then, 4.0 BSD did not do much of anything.

I would look at the history of the fstab file, if you're into that sort of thing, and there's nothing good on TV.

_netdev is something else to be aware of, and I'll mention it here because it's routinely saved my bacon. It's an option that can be added to mount points (like defaults) and it tells systemd that the filesystem is dependent on your network being up. For NFS and iSCSI environments, this is probably a must.
