ABS polymer, also known as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), is a terpolymer made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene. ABS is amorphous and thermoplastic.
ABS polymer was first discovered during World War II for possible alternatives to rubber. It was patented in 1948 and introduced to commercial markets by the Borg-Warner Corporation in 1954. Although it was not useful as a rubber material, with time it became the most popular kind of engineering polymer.
