Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) are a special type of thermoplastics that exhibit properties between highly ordered solid crystalline materials and amorphous disordered liquids over a well-defined temperature range.
LCPs have a highly crystalline molecular chain in comparison to most common polymers. They exhibit a semi-rigid, nearly linear, stacked orientation of molecules which stay highly ordered even in the liquid crystal phase. This special stacked molecular architecture of LCPs creates anisotropic tendencies which introduce many fascinating properties.
The three most common LCPs are semi-aromatic copolyesters, copolyamides, and polyester-coamides.
