Biocompatible polymers refer to the polymers that do not produce toxins or harmful products and stimulate an immune response in biological systems.
Biocompatible polymers include natural polymers such as chitosan and cellulose and synthetic polymers such as PTFE and PEEK (Figure 11.1).
Biocompatible polymers can help to improve body functions without altering normal functioning and triggering allergies or other side effects. They encompass advances in tissue culture, tissue scaffolds, implantation, artificial grafts, wound fabrication, controlled drug delivery, bone filler material, etc.
