Vinyl polymers are polymers made from vinyl monomers of the type CH2=CHR. Vinyl polymers are the most common type of plastic.
Before Staudinger proposed an idea of “macromolecules” in the 1920s, vinyl polymers poly(vinyl chloride) and polystyrene were discovered in 1835 and 1839, respectively. To date, various vinyl polymers with designed structures are everywhere in our daily life. The most commonly used vinyl polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(vinyl chloride).
Some typical vinyl monomers are illustrated in Figure 232.1.
