It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
141 Poly(p-Phenylene Oxide)
Poly(p-phenylene oxide), or PPO/PPE, is a wholly aromatic polyether of phenylene rings linked together by ether linkages.
PPO was discovered in 1956 by Allan Hay and was commercialized by General Electric in 1960. PPO has a very high softening point of 210° C and is very difficult to process. Mixing it with polystyrene in any ratio could compensate for the disadvantages. In the 1960s, modified PPO came to the market under the trademark Noryl.
PPO is made by oxidative coupling polymerization of the monomer 2,6-dimethylphenol (Figure 141.1).
