Living polymerization is a form of chain-growth polymerization where the ability of a growing polymer chain to terminate has been removed (based on the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry [IUPAC]). In general, living polymerization refers to the fact that all polymer chains grow at the same rate with no irreversible transfer or termination reactions. This results in polymers with narrow-molecular-weight distribution.
Living polymerization can follow anionic, cationic, and radical polymerization mechanisms and provide a way to obtain precisely controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution, as well as complex polymer architectures.
