86 Ladder Polymers
Ladder polymers are a type of double-stranded polymer with the connectivity of a ladder. They are unique in that their backbones consist of fused rings with adjacent rings having two or more atoms in common.
There are two general ways to prepare ladder polymers: 1) direct ladder polymerization, in which cyclic monomer units are joined by simultaneously forming two bonds between them, and 2) zipping (lacing) of a linear prepolymer, in which the linear polymer contains regular functional side groups that are then connected to form the ladder structure (Figure 86.1).
