Redox polymers are defined by IUPAC as polymers containing groups that can be reversibly reduced or oxidized.
Redox polymers can be categorized according to their chemical structures into redox-active group-embedded polymers and redox-active pendant-bearing polymers. Redox-active group-embedded polymers possess an electrochemically active backbone consisting of redox-active monomers. In contrast, redox-active pendant-bearing polymers have redox-active groups on their non-conductive polymer backbones, similar to a grafted polymer structure. Due to the different chemical structures, they have different chemical and physical properties, redox reactions, and performances.
