Antimicrobial polymers/biocidal polymers, also known as polymeric biocides, are a class of polymers with antimicrobial activity. This type of polymer possesses the ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoans.
Biocidal polymers can be prepared by antimicrobial monomers or by adding antimicrobial agents to preformed polymers. An example of biocidal polymer (exhibits bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) is shown in Figure 8.1
