181 Polythiazyl
Polythiazyl (polymeric sulfur nitride), (SN)x, is an electrically conductive, gold- or bronze-colored polymer with metallic luster.
The compound was reported as early as 1910 by F.P. Burt, who obtained it by heating tetrasulfur tetranitride in a vacuum over silver wool (Figure 181.1).
Polythiazyl has several resonance structures, which are shown in Figure 181.2.
Polythiazyl is a highly anisotropic conducting polymer at room temperature, with the capacity to become superconductive at extremely low temperatures below 0.26 K. It is completely insoluble and relatively inert to oxygen and water. Its thermal stability is poor. Atmospheric heating of the polymer to ca. 240° C leads to explosive decomposition. ...
