142 Polyamide Imides
Polyamide imides (PAIs) are amorphous polymers whose backbone contains two distinct functional groups: amide and imide.
PAIs were first developed at DuPont in 1955. In the early 1960s they became commercially available from Standard Oil of Indiana (Amoco, now Solvay Advanced Polymers) under the Torlon trade name. PAIs are prepared from trimellitic anhydride and various aromatic diamines (Figure 142.1).
PAIs have the highest strength of any unreinforced polymer with excellent creep resistance. They have good stiffness and strength and excellent wear and friction properties. These polymers are also inherently flame retardant and have good chemical resistance. Glass-reinforced grades provide ...
